RPI’s Solar Decathlon Effort

This Fall RPI students and faculty took up the challenge of competing in the 2009 Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. If we earn a bid, we will compete against approximately 20 universities from across the country and around the world. This event is a serious undertaking that requires help from all areas of study across campus.

The Ten categories that will be judged are:

  • Architecture
  • Engineering
  • Market Viability
  • Communications
  • Comfort Zone
  • Appliances
  • Hot Water
  • Lighting
  • Energy Balance
  • Getting Around

The purpose of the event as described by the DOE is :

To challenge the student competitors — the “Solar Decathletes” — to think in new ways about energy and how it impacts our everyday lives. To provide those students with a way to show and tell the world what they have learned. To push research and development of energy efficiency and energy production technologies. And to encourage all of us to act responsibly when making energy choices.
